With increasing age, fork springs lose their strength and tension and the damping effect decreases noticeably. 

This is noticeable, for example, when the fork dips heavily when braking, when the fork bottoms out in 2-person operation or through a spongy feeling on uneven road surfaces. 

The fork springs' task of initially responding softly and not bottoming out with increasing load is often not satisfactorily solved with linear or standard fork springs.
